Surprised that worked for you, but congrats. Did you only use Duo, or did you use multiple materials along with Duo?

I just am curious, since I and many others who criticize Duo seem to see it as a tool that should only be used for beginner knowledge and introduction to a language. Duo also don’t do as many listening examples compared to other apps right? You must be skilled at listening input.

Edit: Here’s another example of a person (skip to 7:20) who did mostly just Duolingo for 2 years and struggled on the JLPT N5 (lowest level)

God, even before the AI bullshit and CEO defending it, why did people use Duolingo. You’re not learning a language, you’re learning how to play a game that is coincidentally about languages. The only good thing Duolingo does is getting you motivated to learn, and teaching basic vocab. That’s literally it. The best advice I got on that platform when I used it as a kid was how it was incorrect, and where I should go to learn from better sources, which is probably why they got rid of forums and comments.

Edit: Forgot to mention the awful and scummy monetization of making people wait to do lessons because of the heart system, while giving paid users unlimited lives. I’ve literally seen a comment on Lemmy where a user said they used a cracked version of Duolingo to get unlimited lives for lessons. Why should you have to crack your language learning app to make it bearable?

YouTube is free, and almost guaranteed to be better. Mango languages is free for students and library card holders apparently, haven’t used it, but others seem to like it. Get yourself some books to read, a textbook/grammar book to practice shit, and watch content online for listening. Use exchange apps for speaking. Use multiple resources, one resource that claims to teach it all is probably lying and can only do so much.

Well, there’s all kinds of GMOs that serve different purposes, because GMO is not just a thing or chemical, it’s literal DNA and genes that they alter in crops. They can be good, like the corn that has fish genes to make it more resistant to frost, or the golden rice in Asia that contains more carotenes so kids don’t go blind.

But as the other comment said, they’re expensive and can’t be regrown again, as if they’re copyrighted. And yes, if we replaced regular non-GMO crops with GMO crops and reduced genetic diversity, then we’d be fucked if a plague or virus hit them and they all died. Furthermore, if one of these crops still actually had the potential to grow seeds and got out into the wild, it could cause environmental issues like becoming an invasive species, and we already have a shit ton of those around the globe.

But people used to use GMO as a trigger word to scare uninformed people into denouncing all GMOs and looking for GMO free foods.

Technically, almost all foods we eat today are “GMO” in a sense, as we’ve been doing selective breeding of crops and animals since the ancient times, hence why we have such fat animals, bananas without huge seeds, mostly orange carrots instead of the other colors, etc. But the genetic modification stuff didn’t start until the 70s.

If you know you’re about to be in a shady place, you can do a quick restart or lockdown mode on both Android and iPhone. So you still get to use biometrics, but turn it off when you know you might be in some shit soon.

If you don’t put the comma after dog, then it looks like you’re talking about a dog’s pussy. By putting the comma, the reader knows the speaker is using the word dog as a nickname for a person, and is telling “dog” (a person) about how much they love eating pussy. The comma is necessary for clarification.

I saw the pfp and was deadass horrified for a hot second before I realized the joke was the person realizing their comma mistake.

Outright banning them from schools is wrong imo, but if I had to put my phone in a locked box every class, I would’ve lived. I just think banning them outright is bad for needing to contact parents, especially for kids like me who had after school activities often.

My only issue I had with HS teachers were the ones who bitched about people having headphones/earbuds in during class. Obviously I don’t have them in during instruction or group work as that would be disrespectful, but if you’re not at the front of the room talking and we’re doing individual work, I want to have my earbuds in. I had a study block teacher who was so fucking anal about phones and earbuds, when it is literally a fucking break class to do whatever the fuck you want/need to do.

I just really like having music or background noise while doing work.

Gen Z’er here, and well, it depends on the topic. TBH I don’t read much news at all, unless I see it on social media I’m not gonna know about it. But I will read an article if I care enough. Sometimes I want a quick overview, and some channels/reporters can do informative yet brisk news reports.

But when it comes to educational stuff, me and my fellow high school classmates hated watching a video for homework, and would usually just read the transcript of the video instead (and with ctrl + f, you save even more time). This was funny to my xillennial teacher, as he said schools started using videos because kids hated reading textbooks. And I’m not gonna lie, I fucking hate reading textbooks in college. So we’re going full circle it seems.

People have said Mullvad and I’d agree with them despite never having used it. Only thing it lacks is port forwarding, but if you don’t plan to torrent much that won’t matter.

I use Proton, it works great and has port forwarding. A board member has created controversy (praised Trump), but the company is non-profit so there’s that.

If you ever get tired of paying for it, use ReVanced + Spotify (Android), or EeveeSpotify (iPhone)

I just hate the fact that free Spotify sounds so dogshit compared to Free YT Music, which is what I used for years until I got an android again and used ReVanced.

Just tried it out yesterday and today, and thought it was pretty good! Compared the routes it showed me with Waze (GM data) and it showed similar/exact routes.

For others who are curious, the only issues I noticed were:

1. Has a stroke when trying to navigate to my house, seems to think there isn’t an exact road next to it, meanwhile organic maps shows and navigates to it perfectly fine. Seems to struggle with the exact location of a place, especially in a group of buildings.
2. While navigating, if you tap the directions to see ahead, a bar comes up and shows you. However, when you try to dismiss this panel, it goes blank and stays on the screen.

Other than that, seems great, has all the features Organic Maps does and more. Likely to be my permanent navigator app.

If it’s a cotton sports bra, or really just any non clip bra that isn’t skin tight and a soft material, then I could do it, and actually have forgotten one time and fell asleep while wearing it. But I hate clip bras and will never wear them unless literally forced to do so.

Never used Photoshop either but from the way everyone and their mother compares it to GIMP when complaining about the UI, I think it’s safe to say GIMP sucks in that regard.

I’m not gonna lie, the few times I’ve used GIMP to crop a picture, I felt lost as hell.
