  • People are capable of both competition and cooperation.

Capitalism goes out of the way to make the former a value.

Yes, greed is in our nature. But so is altruism. And the idea that people are just greedy by nature, and that all altruism has ulterior motivation, is something capitalists have actively encouraged to justify their values.

So yes, when it comes to greed in the West and how it’s become a value rather than a sin (Jesus eye if the needle parable), I blame capitalism. Of course, if humans didn’t have the capacity for greed capitalism wouldn’t exist.

But to dismiss capitalism as a non-factor at this point in history because humans are greedy by nature, well, it’s propaganda and not based on a modern scientific understanding of human nature.

  • The cost of living here isn’t very high. The people I mentioned in my comment as not owning property probably make less than 50k.

A lot of them camp together to split set up costs, gas, etc. So, they make it work, and I know a lot of them make sacrifices to make it work (living in a shitty apartment the other 51 weeks a year so they can afford the lifestyle for example).

It’s not for me, personally. A fun crowd. Like carnies on LSD. But chronic pain and a history of interpersonal trauma make the desert sound like a really horrible time. Plus I’m poor poor (like on disability poor).

I do enjoy the regionals though when I feel up for them.

  • My point was within the context of the argument saying that it’s okay for copyrighted art to be fed to an ai without the artists permission because ai learns like people do and is essentially doing what people do to each other.

But AI don’t participate in culture and they’re not embodied entities. So they don’t have the relational capacity to get art, as I understand it. And therefore they don’t learn art in the same way people do, because they’re not touched by art the way people are.

It’s fine for ai to be used to make art. But to feed ai copyrighted art so the style can be mimicked, automated, and profited from… that feels a lot more like theft to me then if I went to the art museum and tried to ape a Picasso.
