At this point, I think they’re happy to let him continue digging himself deeper. Any normal person would think “Shit, I should stop incriminating myself”, but the annoying orange is too much of a narcissist to think anything can and will be held against him in a court of law.

I honestly believe the GOP strategy is to b!tch and moan claiming he’s innocent while secretly allowing things to proceed which will ultimately put him behind bars. Then they hope to tell America “Trump is innocent, vote for our candidate and we’ll set him free!” in an effort to steamroll the 2024 election.

And of course the gullible chucklef*cks will vote for the GOP believing that Trump really is innocent and that the GOP will free him (which I doubt they’ll actually do once he’s gone and out of the way)

It’s bizarre to me that you think that the GOP leadership wants Trump gone. Besides some reported behind-closed-doors whispering, I can’t imagine what would give anyone that impression.

The GOP leadership want Trump gone. They’re not dumb. Trump is destabilizing and damaging to the party. He doesn’t give a shit about either the GOP or the country. The GOP is all about a small group of people gaining power together, and they’re not in Trump’s extremely small circle of one.

But they want his voters, so they’ll rarely say that out loud.

Yep, precisely. They want to be in control. And Trump has proven time and time again he’s loyal to nobody but himself. That makes him a wildcard that cannot be trusted

            They’re not dumb.

            Counterpoint: yes they are.

He doesn’t give a shit about either the GOP or the country.

I think you underestimate the number of true believers in the GOP leadership, but in any case those who aren’t true believers don’t give a shit. They think they can manipulate him to their ends. They got their tax cut, they got their supreme court, why should they care if Trump cares about the GOP?

Considering he’s literally destroying the Republican Party, the only way the leadership could possibly want him around is if they think they can go the distance and achieve the one party dictatorship Trump promises. Otherwise the problem is that many of them can’t win a primary without his support (but can’t win the general with him).

Mainly, it’s the Democrats benefitting from Trump’s antics. He turns neutrals blue.
