EDIT: Coincidentally, I turned off prevent cross-site tracking, because I got sick of raindrop.io signing me out constantly. However, that seemed, I think, to have solved this issue. The only other thing I changed was to turn on the compact tabs view, but I don’t see how that possibly could have had any effect on this whatsoever. So I think maybe the cross-site tracking prevention thing is broken, or something along those lines

        Always have that going!

Oh I always use private browsing by the way, nearly exclusively… Would losing out on history and cookies be just way too annoying? Maybe tolerable for 24 hours? Would be so curious if you reported back that for some reason private browsing wasn’t susceptible to the bugs you’re experiencing.

Edit: nvm, forgot about your edit

I gotta say, I assumed it was either Lemmy or YouTube, the two places I noticed it.

Yep a lot, I assumed it was because I grabbed the iOS26 beta. Many times I have to force close it and reopen safari

I am not even on the beta. I’ve done them in the past, and they have often been buggy as all get out, plus the liquid glass apparently drains battery even worse in the beta, so that’s two strikes against being a guinea pig this time.

      That said, WTF, Safari?

No iPad experience, but Safari on iPhone is working without any noticeable issues.

Have you tried clearing history and website data in Settings>Apps>Safari along with closing all tabs? It’s a button down near the bottom.

Another thing that causes slow down is lack of storage space. Is the iPad close to full?

I realize these are basic suggestions but sometimes it’s the simplest things that can be the issue.

For me also, only iPad, not iPhone 15 pro.

      • Relative new M1 iPad Air
      • Some screen damage but no visible impact on video
      • only 1/3 storage used
      • solid networking
      • private relay
      • <12 tabs

Admittedly it’s been a while since I rebooted, or restarted Safari

      Symptoms

      • Lemmy UI glitchy, occasionally an empty template with no content. Sometimes links to a previous story instead of the expected ones
      • occasional Lemmy screen freezes
      • YouTube crashes, sometimes video cuts out and continues with audio only.

These are my most frequently used sites on this iPad, so I don’t know if they’re really connected or just the odds make them look that way

Yeah, it’s definitely just on my iPad Pro. iPhone 16 pro safari has been fine. And yes, I have done all the things you suggested, to no avail ☹️.

EDIT: just double-checked to be certain. I have 342GB available.

Yes. It is happening on iOS for me. I can‘t recall when it started, but I regularly have to force quit and reopen because it just refuses to accept input or load pages.

Well, I’m glad it’s not just me. Although I’m also not that glad that this sounding like it’s widespread, and apparently Apple is either not aware of this or has not acknowledged it in any way, and does not seem to be working on offering any solutions at this point in time.
