Discussion questions:
What video games have you played recently?
What are your favorite video game genres?
Question of the week:
What game have you completed recently and what are your thoughts on it?
Playing Chained Echoes right now, it’s pretty fun and feels a lot like Chrono Trigger. Definitely recommend for anybody who likes old school JRPGs.
Sifu was another fun game I played recently, really good fighting mechanics that feel very fluid and look cinematic.
Afterparty was a fun story based game I can recommend for people looking for something casual.
I find I tend to like indie games nowadays because they tend to be shorter and mechanics are simpler, so you can just pick it up and play it for a bit without having to really get into it.
My fav genres are roguelike and story based games, in particular I really liked pretty much everything Telltale games made. I find they always have excellent writing in their games.
I used to play a lot of FPS and RTS games, but last RTS I played was SC2, and for FPS it was Titanfall 2 which was a ton of fun.
Does Sifu have much of a story? It’s one I’ve had some interest in but don’t know much about it
Not much of a story in it, it’s mostly just the innovative fighting system that carries.
Gotcha. I still probably will give it a try but have been interested in it because Sleeping Dogs is one of my favorite games
I should check Sleeping Dogs out, never actually played that one. :)

Tagging those that were here before. Cheers!
Mainly just Final Fantasy XIV.
JRPGs, platformers
Last game I’ve completed was Kirby and the Forgotten Land. it was pretty cute and fun. :)
Playing Now:
Rimworld, again. Basically any gaps between any other games, I start up a new Rimworld campaign. My most played game of all time at this point.
Completed Recently:
Friendly Neighborhood: Survival horror game but with muppets. I initially dismissed it as a FNAF clone, but it is much closer to a Biohazard game. Fun, not long at all, which is a plus in my books these days. Might play it more later to get more endings.
FFXVI: Was okay, probably falls smack dab in the middle of my FF tier hierarchy. Definitely had some major issues with it, but it ended up exceeding my expectations in other areas. Story was interesting enough to make me want to see it through to the end.
Seems everyone is playing Rimworld these days.
Just some Coral Island(Stardew-like game) and Street Fighter 6 to abide the time waiting for Baldurs Gate 3. Today is finally the day, im so hecking excited, the way I haven’t for a piece of media since my teens. I’ll be making the queerest, gayest, most simping character fighting for marginalized people(my kind of power fantasy) ever
Currently playtesting Mars Tactics, It’s sort of like Red Faction combined with XCOM, in that it’s about a worker’s strike on Mars that escalated into a full-blown uprising, but it works on turn-based squad tactics combined with a planetary strategic & logistics system.
Idk why they give me an option to play as the bourgeois though, I’ll never use it. Other than that, it’s pretty damn great.
Seams neat.
Playing NBA2k23, tell everyone you know that is interested in this game to never play it. Piece of fucking shit game made by a bunch of dumbass fucking assholes who make stealing the ball tougher than memorizing Pi to the 3,000,000,000th digit. Whoever made this game is a basement dwelling waste of oxygen. Like who on Earth has this much trouble stealing the ball?! My steal is at 80!!! I hate 2k and everyone associated with 2k. Yall can suck my fuckin dick, MAKE IT EASIER TO STEAL!!! Nobody ever said “wow, I’m having fun with this basketball game but it’s way too easy, I wish I got fouled more when I try to steal” because you know what they’d do if the game was too easy? They wouldn’t have to steal the goddamn motherfucking BALL!!! Sorry for the rant but 2k becomes worse with every year
I’ve reached the point where I’m afraid to actually be done with Tears of the Kingdom. I suppose I actually need to so I can get Pikmin 4. I’m a longtime Pikmin fan so this feels like a fever dream actually having Nintendo do another big push on the series.
Also intermittently playing New Pokemon Snap. Shameless plus, but sub to [email protected] and see pics from my playthrough and add your own.
In the retro category, my consoles are crying in neglect. I’ve only been playing couch multiplayer intermittently when friends come over, usually Didddy Kong Racing on N64
Kinda bouncing around a few games right now, mostly though I picked RimWorld back up, been having fun with that, as well as getting back in to pushing m+ in wow, which I always enjoy
A fellow Rimworlder! Modded or vanilla? I have been a big fan of the VE series of mods, so just started an underground vampire faction game with a few of their more recent mods.
- Age of Wonders 4
- Total War Warhammer 3
- waiting for Rogue Trader
- waiting for Baldur’s Gate 3
- hoping that I can play Armored Core 6
I’m also waiting for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader as well.
Just finished Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
I played the beta, the combat is refreshingly different (does not seem similar to the FFG Rogue Trader rules). I had so much fun with it, that I stopped so I dont spoil it when it comes out.
How’s the atmosphere? The trailers seemed a bit cartoony, which isn’t really an issue given how wacky 40k often is, but does it convey the gloom and doom of it?
- good - they know what they are doing
- a bit cartoony, i will wait for release for improved graphics
- In my short experience - yes
Thanks!
Funny. Last time I was in one of these threads, I was asked what game I was looking forward to. It was long enough ago that my answer was “BoTW 2.” My answer to the current question? Tears of The Kingdom.
Oh wow noice.
Hope you’re enjoying it.
I have indeed, thank you.
Nice!
Mostly DayZ recently and some Rocketleague again for the first time in a while.
Gave TW:Attila a decent shot recently. Pretty good game, TWs just get stale fairly fast for me.
Also tried the HP game a while ago and…it’s just boring. Looks pretty good, there’s tons to do, they put in a lot of effort, but idk. Still feels weirdly lifeless and unengaging to me. Can’t really put my finger on it. On paper it’s everything my 10yo self would’ve wanted from an open world HP game, but it isn’t. Played maybe 8h, haven’t touched it in weeks and I highly doubt I’ll ever finish it.

Does it have proper UI scale now? I remember playing it long ago and it was great and since then a lot of great mods came out but i can’t play it since the interface is microscopic on higher resolutions.
I’m currently playing modded TES V: Skyrim, and I’m about to complete the Dawnguard DLC for the 3rd time
I’ve probably played Skyrim for 150+ hours over the years. Still never completed the main game lol.
I’m pretty sure I spent more time modding Skyrim than actually playing it. That stuff is seriously addictive.
I’ve never modded it. I just like running around. More or less.
I’ve completed all the other quest lines, I think.
One of the great things about Skyrim (and Fallout 4) is the audio and text can be changed to Spanish. It’s great for picking up vocab. Some of that vocab is a bit random, granted. But the repetition of basic items and the ability to make NPC’s say the same lines over and over again. I’ll never forget ‘lata’ (tin/can)!
Nice, are you learning Spanish? That’s awesome!
Yes, I’ve been learning it for a while now. One of the things that makes it easier is switching to a Spanish game or TV series when life is busy. It’s a bit less intense than reading and going through the grammar, but it keeps me in the language.
Does it work well for you? What do you do when coming across a word you don’t know? I’ve been thinking of doing something like this too but figured I need to get a better vocabulary first.
Very well, yes. Otherwise, I get burnt out. I can’t maintain ‘studying’ Spanish every day on top of being an adult and looking after myself. But I can always dedicate half an hour (or more) to escapism. It’s not so much the time, but the energy required for in-depth ‘studying’. So games and TV can really help with that.
If I come across an unknown word on TV, I ignore it. In a game, it depends. In a cut-scene? I ignore it. During gameplay, I usually try to work out its meaning. Sometimes, if I know enough to keep playing, I don’t even worry about meaning, I just keep playing. If I come across the word three or more times and cannot figure it out, I look it up. If the word is frustrating me, I look it up. Occasionally, I write down these words, with a translation, aiming to keep a list – but it never lasts long and I usually forget about my lists quite quickly.
In a game like Skyrim or Fallout 4, you know exactly what e.g. the nouns are because you can see them. So if you look at a carrot and the label on-screen says zanahoria, it’s obvious it’s a carrot. Words like ‘habilidades’ (abilities) and ‘otorga’ (grants/gives) are transparent. I know what they mean; but it’s strange – I wouldn’t necessarily be able to say what the equivalent English word is. I don’t worry about it.
To build vocabulary, I do ‘listening-reading’ (see my post in [email protected]), I read on Kindle with the Spanish dictionary set up and click unknown words for an instant translation (I don’t do this with every unknown word), and I read parallel texts. I also use google translate to look up unknown words if I hear or read them ‘in the wild’. To speed up this process, start with texts that you have read before or texts on topics with which you are familiar. You will be able to guess the meaning of words more easily, which means you won’t need to look up so many words.
Note that I rarely do this, but a fast way to build vocabulary is through word lists:
- Three columns. Write seven-to-ten random words in the target language column 1. Translate them to a known language in column 2. Then translate back to the target language in column 3. Then write the words in the target language in column 1 of a new table.
- The next day, look at each word and see if you can remember it. If so, write it in column 2 in a colour (e.g. blue). If you have to look it up, write it in column 2 in a different colour (e.g. green). Translate column 2 in column 3. Start a new column 1 in a new table, adding the ‘green’ words. Add new words up to seven-to-ten, in total. If you had to look up e.g. three words, you can add four-to-seven new words.
- The next day, go again. Repeat.
- Each week, do one long list of all the words that you remembered (written in blue). You can review the trickier words in this list once a month.
Paul Nation wrote a good guide on learning languages: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/lals/resources/paul-nations-resources/paul-nations-publications/publications/documents/foreign-language_1125.pdf . The same thing in Spanish: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/lals/resources/paul-nations-resources/paul-nations-publications/publications/documents/spanish-version-what-you-need-to-know-to-learn-a-foreign-language.pdf . You can use this as a parallel text if you open the English and Spanish PDFs side-by-side. He has some other work, here, including the same guide in different languages: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/lals/resources/paul-nations-resources/paul-nations-publications/publications .
Just cranked out the Red Faction series. Wanted more out of Guerilla, but the online is dead. Somehow found myself playing AC4 next. Oddly okay with this.
I like sandboxes I guess.
Did you play the first Red Faction?
I’m playing Jedi: Survivor. I really like it both from exploration and story. Think the grand master difficulty isn’t well tuned. I keep getting one shot here and there. Sekiron felt more fair.
Planned to continue Chains of Echo. The turn based system in this game is interesting and isn’t most of the turn based RPGs.
Guess my TOTK playthrough has to stay on hiatus for a while.
Same with my own TOTK playthrough.
