Oh I think the joke is that if the road ahead doesn’t work then they’re fucked, as they can’t drive on it.
It’s interpreting works as a verb instead of a noun.
That makes sense. I got stuck on it saying work and not works.
My friend and I were out driving and we both hit that joke at the same time. We were the funniest people on that road for a few minutes
My personal favorite on a long car ride is:
“Road work 1/2 mile”
“Well shit, I hope it works the whole way there”
Sees “Stop Ahead” sign
Reaches out and puts hand on passenger’s forehead.
“What are you doing?”
“The sign said ‘Stop A Head’”
