Yeah there’s a checkbox for it under profile settings. There’s a ton of great communities, I’ve subscribed to around 40. Once you get a good set of communities can just set your default to “Subscribed” in profile settings. That will be your front page. You don’t really want to use “Local” because it may not be very active. “All” has a lot of stuff in it you may not want to see. There’s a few communities where I don’t ever want to see their content. See lemmyverse.net for community info. There’s a lot of good communities on kbin as well (you can access those from Lemmy and vice versa).

That’s your best bet at the moment. Liftoff was another decent option but latest update doesn’t see the lemm.ee instance for some reason. Things will get better on the app front in a month or 2 when Boost and Sync go live.

I’m really not ready. My Connect for Lemmy app is renamed to Lemmy is fun and is using the rif icon, it’s hard to let go.

I want to create a community for my local city but when I click the button after entering the name, description, logo, etc. Nothing happens. Do I need to do something first?

Hey! Unfortunately, the errors on community creation are not currently properly displayed in the frontend. What name are you trying to create the community with?

The most common reason for failure is simply the community name already being in use.

Hmm, I did a search for it again upper and lower case and it didn’t return a result. I’ll keep playing around and see how I get on, thanks!

Just checking - are you definitely trying to create the community with a lowercase name?

This whole fediverse thing is a bit strange after 10 years of rif. But Reddit was going downhill for quite a while. Hope this takes off!

I think I’ve figured everything out, except how to link to posts across servers. That still drives me mad. Some of the apps (like Connect for Lemmy) are doing URL rewriting, but I can’t assume that’s happening for everyone.

It’s pretty strange coming from Reddit. Each instance has its own communities but you can access all of them from the instance you signed up in? Like the equivalent of subreddits within subreddits. Or maybe I’m just unused to it.

And reddit still has a long way down. Look at Facebook, it never died, it just lost most young users and it grew stale with conspiracy theories, blind hatred and fake news.

It’s the walmart-ification of social media. They’re self sustaining because of their size, but that’s not enough to make them an enjoyable experience. Just corporate, sterile, and lots of bored people.

It’s like buying from a supermarket and getting pretty much everything in one stop (most of it being mediocre) VS getting local, yummy, Bio, more expensive products from 5 local small shops.

Just uninstalled RIF this morning when I opened it up like I always do when I wake up.

It was a good run but dang. Now I’m trying to figure all of this fediverse stuff. The app Jerboa on Android seems to be working pretty well.

I straight up don’t know how to use Lemmy. I feel like I need to relearn how to ride a bike.

I’ve been here for a bit more than a week now and my biggest advice and is to take it as it is. Take a deep breath, accept that this is Lemmy and not something else, and that you’re feeling it out. This is not relearning a bike, this is getting in a peddle boat for the first time. Similar, yes, but also it’s own thing.

Set feed to All. Scroll. See interesting topic you want to see more, subscribe to community. Interested in specific topic? Search for community in communities page. Once you gather enough subscriptions, set feed to subscribed. Scroll.

Yeah it’s different, you’ll burn in pretty quick though, just have to get used stuff being spread across a bunch of instances. It feels pretty natural after using it a while. The designers try to make it easy. It’s kind of like email where each community has two parts to its name.

I’m on wefwef on Android and I can just hold down on the image and the context menu has both download and copy. I don’t have an iPhone to test if it’s the same though

I was interested to see what the rush was going to be like when Reddit mobile apps shut down. Looks like it might be pretty significant. Is this bigger than the blackout rush?

We’ll soon find out based on how many times we have to copy paste an explanation of how community search works to confused new Lemmings 😄
