I would like to slightly depart from the discussion about “centrism”, and focus more on the way each sentence is constructed. “X but Y”. An ex-colleague once told me:

When people use the word ‘but’, pay close attention to what came before, and especially what comes after. More often than not, it means “People say X, it is wrong, Y is right”, or even “Not X and Y”. It only rarely means “X, but also Y”. “But” is usually only about saying, then disingenuously discarding what comes before.

I realised they were right, and since then, every time I meant “X, but also Y”, I rephrased my sentence not to use the word “but”.
