  • We got a u/stamets appreciate post going here?

Stamets, you have near singlehandedly made Lemmy my full time internet home. You keep me off the Other Place, and you bring joy and humor to my day, every day. Thank you for being a collector of humor and for distributing it in true Star Trek fashion, for the use of all. It’s been a long road, getting from there to here, but thanks to you, our time is finally near.

    Live long and prosper, Stamets.

  • I’d say you need to investigate why you did that, what your intention behind it is/was, and work on yourself to figure out how to overcome the challenge you face of relying on stereotypes.

I was never a conservative, per se, but as a kid and early teen, I thought racist/sexist humor was hilarious in certain contexts, not because I believed them, but because I they were, to me, absurd. The punchline for me wasn’t “haha, blackness” or “lol woman,” so much as it was “did you hear that ridiculous thing? Isn’t it hilarious, specifically because it would be unfathomably stupid to believe it?” It seems like your joke about the truth being offensive may have been meant in this way?

It’s a dark stain for me, I don’t like it, and despite understanding that I didn’t actually believe those things, I needed to investigate about myself, and realize that despite not thinking any of those things were true, I was perpetuating things that some people genuinely do believe, and that is harmful as fuck. Actually learning that some people legitimately held those beliefs changed my opinion about just how humorous those jokes were. It makes me feel deep regret, and it genuinely makes me scared someone is going to find my old Myspace account.

All that to say, yes. It’s wrong that you did, it’s wrong if you continue to do so, and regardless of the intent behind those sorts of remarks, they are harmful. They perpetuate harmful stereotypes, and can be hurtful to people in ways both intended and unintended. Buck up, do the self work, and be better. You can do it. Clearly you already want to. That’s one of the things about being on the left, unlearning a lifetime of bullshit. It’s not something that happens, it’s a constant education, a constant unlearning and relearning. Heck, I’ve been an anarcho-communist for nearly a decade and I just found out a year ago that the G-word for the Roma people is a slur. We had a dog with that name. I’ve used that word my whole life, and never once meant harm by it. But harm it could have, and possibly did, cause. But now I know, I have learned, and moving forward, I will make changes. That’s the goal here. Pobody’s nerfect, but you gotta be willing to do the work, and not make excuses for past actions, and not make the same mistakes again.

  • Admittedly not a techie person, so anything on that side of things I can’t speak to at all, but on the political side of the fence (politics is what you’re describing) it seems like we’re in the nation state building era of the fediverse. Lines are being drawn, borders created, and rules invented. I think it’ll take some time for the dust to settle, but eventually we’ll probably end up with several super large (relatively, anyway) instances, run by major players, probably corporate, and a bunch of little servers that are forced to either be niche communities unto themselves (think Cuba) or effectively vassal states of the larger instances (think Micronesia) or run by one of the larger ones, but semi independent (think Guam).

But honestly, I still think that’s better than the alternatives. That sea of fediverse Cubas is just recreating forums in a new way, and I’d love to get back to that. And even if there are massive corporately run instances, it seems like you’ll still have way more freedom than you currently do under the meta/reddit/Twitter climate. (With that caveat that I do not know things about tech, so maybe not?)

But no, despite lemmy being a reddit lookalike, or Mastodon being twitteresque, none of these are replacements for those. They’re their own thing, that will evolve and become more and more distinct as time goes on. Hopefully anyway. I still like it here way better than Reddit, even aside from my personal feelings about open source software, political bullshit surrounding rich people and corps. I like the climate here, there’s plenty of content, and I feel like I can have actual conversations again (like this one!) Instead of just me being baited by someone looking for karma like on reddit. Yes, I hope Reddit dies, and yes, I came to lemmy from reddit, but even if neither of those were the case, I still think it’s nicer here, and that the model has potential. Again, I don’t know shit about tech. For all I know this isn’t super scalable. But from the view point of instances as states instead of email, I see it being pretty expandable. We just have to figure out how to prevent America from nuking anyone. :p
