  • This is not “new”, but it is not good either.

    Humans gonna human.

What is “new” is the degree of addiction that the social media apps bring to the table, which e.g. a newspaper never could.

At the end of the day, technology merely provides tools. It is up to us to decide how best to use them. The newer an invention is though, the less adjustment people and society have gone through to determine its proper place.

And social media does offer noticeable benefits in connecting people to others in profound ways, which they might NEVER have experienced otherwise - some people are literally only alive today bc of help or information that they received on social media, without which they would have been exposed to greater likelihood or degree of harm.

Still, the addiction potential is real, so as with literally everything else in life but stated from a capitalistic viewpoint: “buyer beware”.

    That’s my 2¢ anyway.

  • The Mbin software federates with both Lemmy and Mastodon at once. The Interstellar app works for it (+ also PieFed, though the latter does not currently federate with Mastodon, only Lemmy and itself). The largest Mbin instance iirc is fedia.io. By default you see the “Threads” content shared with Lemmy, but clicking the top left icon and then choosing “Microblog” will show content from Mastodon.

The terminology can be quite confusing, especially on Mbin compared to Lemmy - e.g. Lemmy-style “Communities” on Mbin are called “Magazines”. The sharing between Lemmy, Mbin Threads/Magazines, and PieFed is called the “Threadiverse”, while the sharing between Mastodon and Mbin Microblog/People does not have a unique name iirc (though I don’t use Mbin or any Mastodon or Microblogging so apologies if I am incorrect here), so it just uses the wider name “Fediverse”, which also includes the Threadiverse inside of it as well. A wiki is in progress, looking for contributors. That community [email protected] has a ton of great reading material, as too does [email protected].

  • Moreover, it’s her instance, and she can do whatever she wants with it.

Its users are free to leave whenever they wish, but I doubt many will as a result of this bc (a) Ada is awesome, and (b) the comments look strongly in her favor. Also © Ava’s policies are clearly explained at the outset, and firmly and fairly applied.

Our approval outside of the situation does not matter in the slightest:-).

(That said, if it did, I would want to see some additional context, bc wine that phrase can be used as a dog whistle, I believe it may also be legitimate as well. I would strongly hope that the additional context in this case provided the justification that I can’t fully see here. Which knowing Ada, seems highly likely. Edit: if this comment really is it, then nvm, I get it. Tbf that really does seem like a discussion that needs to be had among centrists, but I can totally see why Blåhaj doesn’t want to federate that content and thereby host it on its own servers. So without prejudicial judgement either for or against the original comment, I definitely support Ada’s call here. As I always end up doing when I dig deeply enough to see what’s going on in each situation. I am not saying that I would have done it - perhaps a community block or other reduced feature could have been applied, but for her server, it’s her right.)
