    Smaller f-stop number = shallower depth-of-field = just the cat’s head is in focus.

    Larger f-stop number = more depth = cat’s head, tail, & butt is in focus. A bit overall darker.

    Largest f-stop available = maximum depth in the focused plane = head, body, tail, and backgrounds is in focus. Image is more overall darker. This can be compensated for by using a slower shutterspeed number to bring in more light sensitivity.
