Unfortunately shell script is not as portable as you might be anticipating. Different distro run different shells, with different settings, and also different tools. Think BSD grep vs GNU grep.

The development style of systemd is the same as most BSDs, and nobody in their right mind would argue those are counter to the Unix philosophy.

Targets are just a more flexible, granular run level. Plus it can actually handle dependencies.

Everyone should just use the flatpak. You can get the latest version, latest Mesa, latest mangohud etc on any distro and it will all work exactly the same.
