  • This starts with some ambiguous “protecting the children” from porn argument to eventually requiring everyone to be “verified” with a digital ID before they can set foot on a highly controlled internet (or worse). We’re already seeing increasing glimpses of this and it’s in the government’s and big tech’s interest.

I’m so tired of the constant barrage of shit from all directions. This isn’t the beautiful future of humanity I imagined as a kid. No one will look out for us except for us, the actual people that these out of touch rich and powerful high society clowns try to control and keep occupied with stupid culture wars amongst each other, or placate with bread and circus. Enough already ffs.

  • The official Android app is buggy (though it is beta), the content and creators are lacking, and it’s hard to find actual Pixelfed instance accounts for the things I want instead of a federated account from Mastodon, etc.

That being said, I’ve been using it for several months and like it. I’d be using it a lot more if it had more people and content and better discovery. FYI, I’ve long since deleted my Instagram account so I’m just patiently waiting for Pixelfed to pop off like Mastodon and Lemmy.

  • You can educate them if they ask but otherwise you can’t force them because most people are very resistant to this type of thing.

Your best option is to stop using FB messenger yourself and tell them they can reach you on Signal. If they’re really your friends, I’d like to imagine they’d follow you over. If your friend group switches, more people are sure to follow which will help speed along mass adoption and normalization via word of mouth to other friends and family.

  • It’s been non-stop advanced bullshit after bullshit coming out of basically all corpos for the past year, but things were always headed in this direction. Muskrat just helped speed things along. The silver lining in all of this is the Fediverse and other platforms are finally popping off. Hopefully that trend gains more momentum and big tech dies before we end up further into a future we don’t want to be in.

  • A lot of people don’t bother with changing defaults and corpos like Google, Microsoft, and the likes are well aware of this which is why Google pays Mozilla hundreds of millions of dollars per year to be the default search engine.

I understand the compromise at the surface level but the implications just result in Google gaining more power and data, making it harder for “alternatives” to replace it over time which puts us all in an a bad situation when they decide to pull shit like WEI.
