  • Annoyingly enough, the other day got the first RTF file I’ve gotten in probably 20 years. To make matters worse, it was JSON that the customer decided should be sent as an RTF attachment to an email.

Of course I run Linux on my work computer so I didn’t have wordpad anyway. I had to use a cli utility to convert it to text, then use vscode to properly format it, since he conversion removed all the indentation/spacing.

If I never see another RTF file again, it’ll be too soon.

  • The problem isn’t 4k vs 1080p. I have a separate library for my 4k items which isn’t accessible remotely.

    The problem is twofold:

    1. My uplink speeds suck, so often a 1080p file can’t stream remotely without being transcoded down to 720p.

    2. Almost everything I have is encoded to x265, and many Roku devices don’t support that, thus causing media to be transcoded even locally. (The device I use for 4k stuff does but other TVs in the house currently use devices such don’t)

Also, I’m not just running this on a raspberry pi with a single disc. I have over 1500 movies, and 200 TV series already taking up over 30 terabytes on a RAIDZ2 server. So it’s not just a simple matter of throwing an " extra fifty bucks" at it.

Frankly, with everything that’s running in my home lab, the added electricity in CPU power to transcode is barely a rounding error.

Is it possible for me to arrange things so that nothing ever needs to transcode? Sure, but it would be far more trouble and cost than it’s worth at this time.

Not everyone has the same needs or restrictions.

  • It’s not about what you as the searcher has. It’s about where the content you’re searching for is located. If the entity or company you’re searching for has only published within walled gardens such as Instagram or Facebook, then you are less likely to successfully find that information in Google. If they had published a normal website, then Google would be better able to index that information and provide you the result you want.

  • I started similarly with Yggdrasil, but quickly moved to Slackware, downloading floppy images on a 2400bps modem.

These days I use Xubuntu on my desktops/laptops and Debian on my servers.

While back in the day I (to quote Weird Al) “beta tested every operating system, gave props to some, and others, I dissed 'em”, I just haven’t got time to deal with all that any more.

  • Does anyone NOT use old equipment for a homelab?

I’ve got 4 x Dell R620 servers, though I’ve recently shut down 2 of them because they are running in an unconditioned garage closet and it’s been absolutely hot this summer.

Also have 4 old 16-disk trays from a Nimble SAN, but again only running one of them (16 x 3TB SAS) for heat reasons.

I also have the Nimble controller but the firmware is borked and I can’t get a copy without a service contract and you can’t get a service contract on this old hardware. I briefly had it working running Linux on the two controllers, which works but is a bit tricky since shutting down one side causes the other side to shut down unexpectedly. So I’m leaving it unused until I can either sell it or find a copy of the proper firmware.

  • It seems like you don’t understand the point of time blindness then. How do you “leave earlier” when you completely lose track of time?

Hell, even for work meetings, I have to have the most obnoxiously loud and annoying notification alert on my work computer that can be heard throughout the entire house, and I still end up late to some meetings, even though I’m already sitting at my desk.

Your post is like complaining that a blind person just needs to open their eyes if they want to see, or they’re just a moron or an asshole. It shows profound ignorance about the subject and complete lack of empathy for people who have a problem that you don’t have direct experience with.
