On your second point, I came across an online comment asking about a Malay name Saiful, “Saif means sword, so it is sword of what?”
When written in Arabic or Jawi, it is romanised as Saif Al-… No wonder they were confused.

Penang island has both dams refilled to above 60% so rely less on water from mainland. Basically northern states aren’t in drought mode.
This website showed dense hotspots and moderate haze on 20 Aug in parts of Kalimantan, so you’re right about the last sentence.
Yup, open to all Lemmy visitors 24-7
Personally I’m holding out trying W11 as much as I can, either until my work laptop/PC gets refreshed, or I buy a new laptop/PC. W10 is supported up to October 2025, so there’s still time.
Another example is 烧/燒: “shao” in Mandarin, “sio” in Hokkien but SEA pronunciation closer to /sio/, while Mainland and Taiwan is /ɕio/. ɕ rendered in Pinyin is “x”.
TIL the bidding for broadcasting rights was quite controversial. FIFA rejected a lot of low bids, which is one of the reasons why Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand did not have official broadcaster for the Women’s World Cup.
Still think those 3 countries had other priorities to spend media coverage on during the tournament period. You got a point.
They think no one will show up to watch on the Chinese 7th lunar month (starts 16 Aug).
Life goes on as usual.
Also a constant reminder that our country (esp Peninsula) is quite evenly split among the two major coalitions. Have an open mind about the political views of “the other side”.
Thank you for letting us know! I wouldn’t have check back otherwise. Booked a visit this week.
Welp, all remaining slots for this Penang stop have been taken up.
@[email protected] Did anyone you know managed to visit?
Perhaps this article explains it, or at least gives an overview.

Had CC Lemon once from the can, and it tasted like Sprite with more lemon flavour?
I noticed it few days ago when the sky was clearer. Edit: oh just found out moonrise today was 10:05pm, so if your eastern horizon is clear, you’ll see it. 🌝
The next full moon is similarly large, and since it’s the second full moon in one calendar month, some people call it a “blue moon”. Infographic here.
Preparing for overseas vacation, so settle this and that.
Selamat pagi~ Syukur sudah Jumaat! (TGIF in Malay?)
I also first thought of that Chinese proverb, which is literally “get an inch, advance to a foot”.
Give them an inch and they will take a yard/mile? Quite wordy I know.
Guess it’s to fill the gap after removing a cancerous testicle, and not purely for aesthetic purpose.
Dairy-er out your dairy-air 🙊
Man, today’s daily thread is real funky.
What even is (or isn’t) curry… 🤔 Is tikka masala curry or spicy thick sauce?
Indian korma is meat/vegetables braised in yogurt, stock and spices. In Malaysia and southern India yogurt is replaced by coconut milk. Not quite the same as the typical curry.
Halfway through my overseas trip. Highlight of the trip is supposedly a few days away. Had to buy roaming data to stay online. Hope y’all have a great day ahead.
