I really enjoyed Name of the Wind until about 3/4 of the way through and I sat back and though: Orphan kid, goes to magic school, has male and female friend classmates, one professor seems to not like him…holy shit, I’m reading a reimagining of fucking Harry Potter.

Two I have to mention
The first book of Anthony Ryan’s Raven’s Shadow trilogy, Blood Song, is one of my favorite fantasy books. I just really liked it. The second book was OK, the third was an absolute train wreck. I would have preferred it to be unfinished. Huge disappointment for me.
The Lightbringer series by Brent weeks started off strong. The Black Prism was great in the magic system seemed unique. Second book was OK, good enough I was looking forward just enough to finish the trilogy. Then the third book didn’t finish, so I figured he just stretched out the series to milk a few more dollars from the idea. Then the fourth was similar. I couldn’t bring myself to care about the next book. Big disappointment.
HONORABLE MENTION: WoT. Made it to book 6 or 7 both times I’ve tried to read through them. Then the characters, the writing, everything, just starts to piss me off.

LOL, more distraction from one party’s inability to do their freaking job. It’s funny that 1) alien visitors cross unfathomable distances using what must be technology far, far, in advance of anything we have, yet “crash” and 2) These “crashes” only happen in the US, or the US quickly swoops in to take all evidence of this from foreign countries.
tl;dr Americans are so self-centered and narcissistic it’s painful at times.

I love the idea. It’s not working for me. Violenmonkey, firefox, Linux, for what it’s worth. I’ve been wanting something like this since I started using Lemmy.
In the past, when there was a much higher tax on high income earners, instead of paying more in taxes, they would spread the wealth a little more equitably. This was true in Hollywood, in corporations, hell, in working service industry jobs. There were still rich, but so were others. In the past 40 years, we have been experiencing the greatest wealth transfer (over $50 fucking trillion ) from the working class to the 1% ever. And it’s poised to get worse. Anyone who doesn’t support unions and a strongly progressive tax is either ignorant of the history of the US, or an asshole. There is no in between.

It’s freaking hilarious how untrustworthy China is, yet the US still trips over themselves to buy Chinese crap. The capitalist race to the bottom in full effect, from the economy to the gov’t.
Several decades ago I read Don Quixote. It’s a well known book. A man searching the land for the glory of a time that has passed. The yearning for how things used to be, but not recognizing that time has gone by and it’s not possible to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
Hawai’i sovereignty people are modern day Don Quixotes. An almost bittersweet inability to accept the reality in front of their faces.
Oh, I’ve followed this stuff for years and years. I’ve been using Linux pretty much exclusively for a quarter of a century. People love to harp on the security issues, but from what I’ve seen that’s pretty much theoretical. The only real compelling argument is that developers are leaning toward Wayland, so that’s the way it will go. I’m sure some day I’ll go to update and it’ll be time to make that change.
I’m not a developer. I wasn’t super happy with the change to systemd, but it’s not like I was the one that had to deal with the init v issues, so when it changed, I went along. I’m sure the same will happen with Wayland. The last time I tried it, a lot of my decades of cruft didn’t work, shortcuts and workflow issues. Sure, I should probably clean up all that crap anyway, but like I said, it’ll happen when it happens. Until then, I’m completely happy with X11.

That’s a good read. Doctorow is usually a good read. It’s been interesting hearing a lot of capitalists recently bringing up how “government is just the biggest business” (Muskrat) in what seems like an attempt to divert the current growing animosity toward private ownership. Reading the article, it’s pretty clear the necessary gov’t role in a working capitalist society.
What would you use for a synonym for based? I keep seeing that used. I always thought it was just some alt-right meme bullshit, but I’m learning I was wrong. I still don’t get the use. My mind always thinks “based on what?”
I’ve enjoyed the books, but they really seem that they need an aggressive editor. Being long for the sake of being long just doesn’t work.
