Most trips I don’t use the cart, I also just do short walks on a semi daily basis for most things. I was just pointing out it’s still possible to do big trips without a car. I mainly cart for the bulky/heavy items. Bags of rice, paper towels, cat litter, etc. Or if I’m doing a bigger trip to a specialty market across town like an Asian grocer.

I’m interested in Framework’s new laptop with an upgradable GPU. That’s one my biggest gripes with gaming laptops, GPUs can be outdated pretty fast compared to the rest of the system. I know it has been tried by other companies before, but upgrading is Framework’s entire business model so it has a better chance of succeeding then a one-off laptop by a different company.

  • How much trouble does winter weather cause for folks in Detroit who do not have cars? How close to downtown Detroit do you need to be to still have an acceptable amount of freedom of movement without needing a car?

From personal experience living in Denver (we get roughly the same snowfall as Detroit). I found driving in the snow much more annoying then walking/taking the bus.

I’m guessing Detroit’s lack of car ownership is partly due to income.

  • No? Set termostat to a lower temp in the winter so the heater doesn’t stay on as long. Higher temp in the summer so the AC doesn’t stay on.

Another reason to keep it closer to the outdoor temp is clothing. I loathe places in the winter that have the heat cranked up, I dressed for the cold, I don’t want to melt because businesses crank the heat up to 80F for some reason. Same with the summer, I’m shivering cause I dressed for 90F but inside is in the high 60’s.

  • That site is showing literacy improvement for 4th graders since 2003. It also says “21% of Americans 18 and older are illiterate in 2022.” but then another graph showing “United States 86.0 %” in global ranking of literacy. It’s just a hodgepodge of stats being semi-sourced with little to no conext, it even includes Wikipedia as a source.

I’m not saying there’s no literacy problems in the US, I just don’t know what to make of that site specifically.
