  • I’ve spent a lot of time around the nuclear industry. I think it’s better baseband power than fossil fuels. if I could flip a switch tomorrow and all the plants that had been built through the 90s were still going, sure, I’d love that route. Too many of those are gone. But thankfully solar and wind have become so ridiculously cheap at scale and deployable ready that arguing for a new investment in nuclear plants is hard to justify, especially conventional steam powered setups we’ve become used to. Bring in SMRs, but know those smaller setups can serve less and still generate the same kind of waste. Bring on breeder reactors that can run off other reactor’s waste output! But again know there will be radioisotope waste in some part of the pipeline. Molten salt closed loop setups for sure. But at six billion plus per unit, no, build solar and wind on gigantic scales please. Refurb and keep the old plants running, but don’t pursue a large nuclear component moving forward.

    YMMV. We’ll need everyone to work together if we’re going to get our asses out of this shit. World wide, and coordinated.

  • this is why I’d prefer to skip geoengineering and, though the scale is mind-boggling and the costs tremendous, go full hog on a solar occluder. a big disc in space made of lunar regolith and recycled space junk. this is a herculean task, but would prevent us from playing scary games with our one breathing, semi-functional atmosphere. by blocking a small but growing percentage of sunlight, as the project goes on, it should be possible to keep ground level temps from getting deadly hot. eventually you could build solar generation on such a space object and microwave gigawatts back to earth, while simultaneously lowering global temps in a controllable manner.

    I know a lot of this sounds pie-in-the-sky, but really it’s the convergence of many, many different fields opening possibilities never speculated upon in the past. Automated manufacturing, robot mining, lunar-based perskovite solar cell manufacturing, SpaceX’s starship to haul all this shit to the moon and start building - so many of these individual parts either didn’t exist at all 20 years ago, or were fantastic leaps of science fiction - and now they’re literally coming together. And boy do we need 'em all.

    I see this is as the ultimate make/break point for our species, yeah we achieved spaceflight and nuclear power and, I dunno, The Rolling Stones, but if we can’t survive the effluence our industrial output exhales we really aren’t shit as a species. We’ll have to work together too.

    so… \s or not, if we don’t do this and traipse down the road of injecting some more shit into the atmosphere attempting to correct temporarily for the other shit we injected into the atmosphere for 300 years, I suspect it’s gonna be a rougher road and end in a very interesting fossil record thesis for some future species’ exo-anthropology dissertation.

    Obama added to the national debt in order to jumpstart a stalled economy that was deep, DEEEEEEP in the shitter after Bush just noped’out after letting the housing market explode and adding two wars to the bill. Paying all that shit off, PLUS, what was planned to be damned-near-universal-healthcare but became JUST a huge expansion to most people’s health benefits (the ACA).

    Those are things Obama’s admin paid for and we saw actual, tangible returns on. The economy roared back to life. Medical costs and insurance costs went down.

    What benefits did we see from Trump’s deficit ballooning tax cuts? hmm lemme look here… ah, the report says JACK SHIT.

    Unless you’re a billionaire.

    So yeah, they both added to the national debt but at least most americans received a functioning economy and a chance for healthcare from Obama. Genuinely, Thanks Obama!

  • Your statement is specious at best and you need a full breakdown spelling out how you expect me to believe it with citations and evidence.

    The Union of Concerned Scientists disagree, stating:

    Think it over: renewables produce industrial construction waste - carbon fiber, aluminum, composites etc., ONCE. during construction and erection (hehe). Then they run for decades. At the end of their lifecycle, especially for solar, there’s already tremendous effort going into recycling.

    Your nuclear reactor is producing it 24/7/365 every day it’s in operation, for decades hopefully. But it also requires thousands of tons of concrete (huge emissions creator), a water supply that won’t ever be interrupted, and hardening against terrorist attack etc. Represents a shitton of material costs alone, before you get to processed fuel rods.

    Retaining the investment already made makes sense; crashing a program of nuclear plant production to meet the need - no. The enormous amount of time and energy used to create these plants, and the humongous regulatory hurdles in the way, with STILL NO CLEAR PATH FOR THE HORRIFIC NUCLEAR WASTE THEY PRODUCE, don’t justify it.

    Finally, consider lifetime operational safety in a wildly changing climate: are we going to have more wildfires and hurricanes in the future? YES. Which is better to burn or tsunami - a coastal nuclear power station, or a wind farm? Drought is going to become a constant thing. How many wind farms melt down without water? Try that with a steam powered nuclear station.
