Overall solid meme content, but when when I lived in a rural area cars where what let us connect with the community because we were so spread out. When living in the city I was less connected to the community because I disliked my neighbors…

If you’ve seen the rural areas of the midwest its literally acres of fields, one farmhouse and its accompanying sheds/silos/whatever, and then more vast area of field or wilderness

We do in fact have woods and undeveloped areas here. Some of the woods get pretty deep.

Yes lmao. My grandparents didn’t get a road until like 2010. And that “road” is a dirt road the county grades once a year and is about 1 mile from their house.
Rural America is incredibly rural. I just checked, their county (an unincorporated county at that) has a density of 14 people per square mile.

It was totally feasible to run a rail line to every single grain elevator in every rural community. It was infeasible NOT to. If you can’t get to your local agricultural distribution infrastructure, you can’t do agriculture in the first place. So yeah, why can’t rural communities all be served by trains?
There isn’t a grain elevator on every farm, farmers transport grain to them on trucks. So yeah, passenger rail as frequent as grain elevators would be great. Still need cars to get there.

people can walk too, to a station. walking is good for you and would improve population health.
And people drive themselves on those roads. You need to hire people to run and maintain the trains.
How far do you expect people to walk? The rural parts of my state have an average of less than 10 people per square mile. Is the train stopping every mile or two? Not terribly efficient. Trains between and around population centers would be great, but expecting rural people to fully ditch cars is just completely infeasible.
Yeah, I think people over and underestimate the value of rural public transit. The underestimating is that people vastly overestimate rurality. Small cities whose residents think of themselves as rural often would benefit from public transit, though trams may be a better option.
But the fucking boonies, places that never had a train or tram but they used to just have horses, those places benefit from personal vehicles. I wish those places would recognize that they’re a small minority of the population and infrastructure shouldn’t prioritize their ability to not take transit once they get into the city, but they do need accommodation
I love taking public transport in the cities! So much more convenient than even cabs the vast, vast majority of time.

I’m honestly struggling to see how it could. I dunno what it is with people on Lemmy getting so hyper fixated on trains and thinking they’re the solution to nearly every transport solution.
Trains are great for moving large amounts of people between big urban areas, but terrible for more point to point travel. Busses make more sense than trains in rural areas but cars will always be way more practical.

I abuse the eye contact thing all the time. If I’m crossing the street and someone is coming in too fast I just stare at them deadass the whole time. Always gets them to slow down

I mean it makes a lot of sense. The distance on the map has a lot less relevance to my day to day life than how long it takes to travel it. That is true for any kind of transportation, so I don’t know what op means with that.
Eye contact is also common sense.That’s one good way of being sure the other person is aware of you and your vehicle.
I have 2 of those. But honestly I just get angry easily at pretty much anything.
Also I feel at least saying that something is 30minutes away by car makes more sense than 50km. Mainly because it all depends on the route. 2 places could be the same distance away but take wildly different times to get to just because you can rake the motorway to place A but have to take the backroads to place B.
It’s also 45 minutes away by train but the train station is in a neighbouring town. Or 50min by bus (direct route) or 1h30min by bus (not direct route)
Honestly with public transit counting distance in km makes even less sense. Commute times to subway-connected places vs bus-connected places differ wildly. It’s easier to just use the time directly instead of the distance.

But i think there’s an old traditional irish solution to the car problem. It’s mostly fallen out of favor over there,and we should not let this proud cultural tradition die out, when the world needs it more than ever.

I super agree with the “making it your identity” thing. I drive a sportscar and do all the repairs myself but I largely take public transit because it’s just objectively better almost every time. Meanwhile there are people who can barely stay in their lane and have no idea how the basics of their vehicle work yet they act like you’re talking about cutting away a piece of their soul when you suggest the concept of a protected bike lane beside a place where they can still use their car.
